Fertilization

Phialospores, often called microconidia or spermatia, are produced by Sclerotinia spp. In S. trifoliorum these spores have been used to fertilize sclerotia to produce heterothallic crosses. Their function in fertilization of the homothallic S. sclerotiorum has not been demonstrated. These spores do not germinate and grow vegetatively.
